eliminating types of missing data from final formula

Our project requires that we differentiate missing data and we have therefore
given it a number value rather than leave the cell empty (eg 999 for missing,
888 for not required, 777 for not applicable, etc). However in order to get
correct calculations we need to be able to exclude these values. What can I
do???
 
hi,
one way....
type an apostrophe or quote mark in front of the number. excel will view
these number as text and ignore them in calculations.
