Excel 97
When editing formulas, either directly in cell or in the formula bar,
sometimes cell and range references appear in different colours whilst at
other times matching pairs of brackets are coloured. Both of these are
really useful features, but which is most useful depends on what I am trying
to do. I cannot work out how to control which type of feature is coloured.
Can anyone explain, please?

Thanks
Rosemary

In Excel 97 (and 2000) when you press F2 to edit a formula the range
references are colored and the parens are not (also when entering the
formula initially). As soon as you make a change to the formula the parens
become colored and the references are not.

In Excel 2002 and 2003 you get both references and parens colored all the
time.

Jim,

Thanks very much for this explanation.
In Excel 2002 and 2003, does this mean that the ranges can be manipulated by
dragging the coloured cell borders at the same time as you have coloured
parens? If so, it may be time to upgrade!

Yes it does.
