Editing typed text

Sometimes when I go back in to text I have already typed, the text deletes the text in front of it as I go along. This happens at random and makes typing complex text forms impossible. There is nothing on the subject in the whole of Word Help
HELP!
 
Word has two typing modes: insert and overtype. In a lot of years usage of
Word I've never yet seen a use for overtype mode (which is what you're
complaining about too).
In the status bar across the bottom of Word's screen, look for 'OVR' --
pressing the Insert key or double-clicking toggles this setting.
