editing problems in word 2003

I am having trouble with word 2003. every time i edit my documents the whole
document changes instead of just the highlighted text. eg; if i want to put
in a bullet on a line i highlight it and click on the bullet button. but the
whole documents ends up with bullets on every line. How can i stop this.
