Editing and sending scanned docs.

I have a Lexmark X74 scanner-printer and have had no problem scanning
photographs etc, but having scanned some articles and tried to send
them to Word 2000 so that I can convert the text to readable copy, I
find that my Wor2000 will not let me open the sent documents, saying
there is a "file permission error". Indeed, when I tried to reach the
documents either via Word or Windows Explorer, or even do a search and
find, no such document is to be found. This is very frustrating as not
only can I not edit them, but I can not send them to anyone in
readable form, either by e-mail or as an attached file - when I just
scanned them all they got was a photo image of the page, not in sharp
enough resolution to actally read the text. Anyone any ideas, advice?
Does Word 2000 not include an OCR ability?
