Hi, I am new to access and I need to edit a mdb file. I tried holding the
shift key while opening the file but it doesn't work. Is there another way
to get to the edit?
Thanks

You can't edit an MDB file like a Word document. You must use the tools
inside of Access to modify, create, and delete objects and records.

What do you mean by "it doesn't work"? Database doesn't open? Can't see the
database window? Need more details about the problem.

Hi,
I installed access or runtime access as part of a training program. I have
to update one of the mdb files and they tell me to hold down the shift key
while opening the file. That supposedly will open the file in edit mode so I
can get to a objects tab and do some things in there. What happens is a
window opens with file, window, and help at the top and that is it. That
happens no matter if I hold the shift key or not. The help is of no help.
Thanks

With those menu choices, it sounds as if only Access is opening. Are you sure you're actually opening the database? To
make sure, first open Access, then click File - Open, and locate the database you're trying to open ... hold down the
Shift key while opening and see what happens.

If you have the Runtime version of Access installed, then you can't edit anything - the Runtime is basically Access with
the design features disabled.

Also, the devs may have just hidden the Database window. After opening Access, click Window - Unhide (if Unhide is
enabled). If Unhide is NOT enabled, then nothing is hidden, and you'll need to contact the people who provided you the
database to determine how to edit the database.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. It must be the runtime version and that is why I can't
edit it. I'll contact the supplier.

If it was the runtime version you installed, you won't be able to make
design changes to the database.
