EDIT fails while making changes on files running on DOS

Im having a problem when i'm trying to make chages to
files running on DOS, once i type C:\edit [file_name] hit
enter i get into the file but after five seconds or so the
screen fails and prompts me back to dos prompt not letting
me do any changes..

Does edit fail when you run it by itself?

- Do you mean DOS, or do you mean the "Command Prompt"
under Win2000?
- If you mean DOS then you will get the best advice in a DOS
newsgroup.
- If you mean the Command Prompt then you should run notepad.exe,
not edit.exe. The latter is a legacy 16-bit program that should not
be used in a 32-bit environment.
 
Sounds like your edit.exe got corrupted.
