I am used to the home pc keyboards and find it difficult to use to standard 1
line of numbers on the laptop. There are shaded numbers on the keyboard in a
similar format to what I'm used to, however I can't seem to figure out how to
utilise this. Can someone help me?

press and hold the "fn" key and press the "num lock" key then release both
keys.
the num lock led should now be on and the shaded numbers on the keys will
work.
you will have to repeat the above procedure to turn them off to use the
letters again.

What brand of laptop? My Compaq uses an [Fn] + (one of the F-keys)
combination to toggle the "keypad" setting. I seldom use it so I don't
remember the exact F-key but your laptop manual will show how to do it.

If you have space for one and want to spend the money for it, there are
numerical keypad add-ons you can buy. Probably USB type. But probably only
worth using if you have desk or tabletop space to work on. I can't envision
using the keypad add-on while riding a bus, train or airplane.

Those numerical keys are used by pressing NumLock.
