I am helping a friend that just purchased a brand new computer. It came
with 6 free months of EarthLink Internet Access. I am not with EarthLink,
therefore I am not familiar with the TotalAccess 2004 software they are
offering. Though having the accelerator may be positive, I am a little
leery of all the things in this bundle and the changes and additions it will
make to the system. Any additional information, thoughts, experiences,
direction, etc. would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Assume you are talking about regular dial-up modem access?..I doubt they
would give you DSL!.. I have used Bellsouth internet, both dial-up and now
DSL and have NOT installed any of the software they sent.. In your case, it
might be you have a program already on the computer to set this up. If you
can use Windows setup to install the connection, meaning, the access phone
number, that would be sufficient to set it up and without having to install
all the garbage with it.
I think you are right to be 'leery' of the software, since you don't need to
load stuff that might not be necessary, and i think you can setup a
connection without it..Use the Windows Connection manager or whatever it is
called.

Earthlink total access software is absolutely unnecessary to use dial-up.
You can set up the connection manually without having to install that piece
of bloated software. I've been on Earthlink for over a year and have never
installed that garbage.

If you even think about installing the accelerator, do it for a dial-up
connection ONLY. I've heard that it has little or no impact on performance.
