In Outlook 2003 I have set up an email account with following settings which
are causing a problem:
Incoming Mail server (POP3) r252.easily.com
Logon Information>User Name aless

With these settings the account works fine but when I restart Outlook the
settings have changed to the following:
Incoming Mail server (POP3) Localhost
Logon Information>User Name aless/r252.easily.com

Now on doing Send/Receive I am repeatedly asked to put in a password for the
user name aless/r252.easily.com - the password gets rejected and the dialog
box remains open for me to put in the password.

Any idea why these settings are getting changed automatically and is there a
way to stop it happening?

You're running an anti-virus program that has integrated itself with
Outlook. Disable that integration (it won't protect you any less, provided
you allow the real-time scanner to continue to run) and this will stop.
