Each doc opens a new instance of Word

Very occasionally, Word 2000 opens new or existing files as windows within a
single instance (only 1 item on the taskbar, regardless of the number of
documents open). However, most times, it opens each file as a separate
instance (each is a separate item on the taskbar), although all are shown in
the Window menu. Having multiple instances on the taskbar is a real
pain if you want to close Word because you have to close each one
individually.

Is there a way of making Word open all files in a single instance (as
previous versions did)?

I don't see it in the "File" menu but there is a command you can add to your
toolbar that is "Close All". If you go to Tools, Customize you can find it
under the File Category.

I forgot to mention that this works with Word 2000... Don't know about the
other verions or what version you need assistance with.

It all makes more sense if you have Windows XP as you can close all from the
Windows Taskbar - You can close all from Word with SHIFT+File > Close All.
But Word 2000 does not offer the option to use the old interface - see

Tools --> Options ---> Under the "View" tab, check/uncheck "Windows In
Taskbar". I hope that answers the question you asked.

This function was not introduced until Word 2002!
