E-Z Set-up question

I am ready to make the leap from Win 98SE to Win XP Home
Edition, but have heard many stories from peers about
the "upgrade" process not working so well.

Therefore, I'd like to buy the "upgrade" version of WinXP
Home, but do a completely new install (wiping out Win98SE
and possibly even formatting the drive to start
out "clean") of the new OS. I believe this might be
possible, but just wanted to check to see if anyone has
experience with this and/or can point me in the right
direction.
