I seem to remember some sort of program that notified the sender of
mail as to when the e-mail was opened by the recipient.
Hopefully somebody knows what I am looking for.
Thanks in advance.

I might be mistaken but this is usually a feature of the mail server,
so in other word if the recipient has opened or downloaded the mail
their mail server should respond to you. That would require a
particular setup of the server, not a program on your side to query
the server.

This fails when the quest is to know if the recipient has read /and/
understood the mail ;)

best regards

Many programs can do that, but then the recipient has to allow a receipt
being returned.
If the recipient, or his mailserver/IT Department don't want to, a receipt
can be easily be refused. However....

If you request a free email authentication cerificate, you can. Through this
certificat you can request a receipt if you sign your email with this
certificate. AFAS, the delivery receipt can not be stopped (unless you stop
all outgoing e-mail I suppose)

Personally, I use a free (for non profit use only) E-mail certificate from
http://www.thawte.com/
You can request a free certificate at http://www.thawte.com/email/index.html

You will, however, need to supply the certificate provider with some very
personal info, like social security number of Driver's licence number
(depending on country and state) This is to make sure the certificates are
not used for criminal purposes. I suppose it is a reasonal secure policy.

In general, I am quite pleased with this certificate provider. It works
great with Thunderbird, Outlook Express and Outlook. I have not checked
other e-mail programs, but I guess they will work fine too.

Works well with individuals but less so with sending to companies where
their security screens often prevent returns.

Before you use this program, read in the download section:

Step 3: Register Your E-Mail Address

1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
2. Run SentThere Control if it hasn't started automatically.
3. Click on Create New User
4. Follow the registration instructions.
5. You must register every e-mail address you wish to use with
SentThere.

I don't feel right about registering all my contacts. Some of them
are private e-mail address'. Registering them invites them to a
flood of spam.

You don't have to register all your contacts, just *your* email address(es)
that you'll be using to send the email. I've been using SentThere for a
few years now with absolutely no spam from them.

I'm curious. How does this "highly acclaimed SentTrace Technology" work? The
site is light on technical explanation. Does it use web bugs? Since you've
been using it for some time, I hope you can shed some light on this.

Sorry I can't help you with the technical part of SentThere, but I can say
it does a good job of letting me know if/when someone opened an email
message that I've sent them -- especially for those who *refuse* to reply or
say that they never got my message.

Because I too am interested in how the darn thing works, I downloaded and
installed it. (It does NOT have any spyware) It seems to use a web bug,
thus it is ineffective with any address that receives their mail in text
format. It also advertises itself on each email.

One last note. It's uninstall program leaves files behind.

At work the IT guys have the system set up so that each sender can REQUEST
a reply as to when they received/read (not really...one can open w/o reading!) but
the recipient is NOT REQUIRED to respond...they can if THEY CHOSE to but
NOBODY can DEMAND a reply! For those who do, I refuse, whereas otherwise,
I might respond. This YOU WILL ANSWER ME! attitude STINKS! There may
be a rare few occassions when a reply is NEEDED (e.g., you're going to be late for
work, and emergency, or something akin thereto) but for the most part 99.9999%
this DEMAND STINKS and I refuse to cow-tow to the Power-playing Dipstick!
Just mho!
