Somehow while creating an email message, I inadvertantly initiated the text
override mode, which deletes existing text as I try to insert text into the
middle of a sentence. How do I shut this off?

I think you hit the Insert key to turn it on or turn it off.

On my keyboard, it is at the top of the column of keys that has
triangles pointing up and down at the bottom. Look at the third
key right of the F12 key.
