Sounds like you may have the host server name wrong. Please post the entire
error message so we can tell for sure.

I'm not able to send a e-mail it comes up with an error code: "host renate
galan could not be found". Don't know what I need to do?

Hal already answered that question, but you should know that
your PC's time zone is off by an hour, probably because you
don't have daylight saving time enabled.

does not send or recieve. I am using windows mail, I have Trend Micro
antivirus,

I've been having similar problems since last Friday. Each time I get into
Windows Mail, I get the following error message. I have not been able to
send or receive any e-mails and when I click on "inbox" (or any other folder)
nothing shows up. The number next to "inbox" will periodically change so I
know some of the e-mails are coming through but I can't seem to get to them.

This is my error message:
Some errors occured while processing the requested tasks. Please review the
list of errors below for more details.
An unknown error has occured. Protocol: SMTP, Port:0, Secure (SSL): NO,
Error Number: 0x800C0148.
An unknown error has occured. Account 'mail.bellsouth.net', server:
'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol: Pop 3, Port 110, Secure (SSL): No, Error
Number:0x800C0148.

Any help resolving my problem is greatly appreciated :-)

The "Port:0" part of your error message almost always means interference
from a third party security program.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or
Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, test
your email sending. If it still does not work, the account
has been corrupted by Norton. Delete the account, restart
Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

At your convenience, download and install a more compatible
antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Thanks for your response - I had heard that may be an issue. But now I am
confused. My husband has a separate email account on the same laptop but he
is not having the problems that I am having. He has full functionality -
sending, receiving, viewing, etc. I have my folders (inbox, deleted, sent,
etc.) but there are no emails appearing in them. However, when I right click
and select properties, it tells me how many messages are in the particular
folder that I selected. Why would the antivirus just pick on my account?
Might there be something wrong with my setup? My email did work until just a
week or so ago. Thanks.

What we have found is that problems with an antivirus program
are very unpredictable as far as onset. Some people run into trouble
after only a few hours of operation, while others have gone for six
months before trouble developed. Some never experience this kind
of trouble. It is like a ticking time bomb or playing Russian roulette:
you never know ahead of time when it will go bang.
But the proof of the pudding is in the eating. If you uninstall the
antivirus, and the problem goes away, you know you have found
the culprit.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled.

The error message you included is not a send error, it is a
receive error. So is your problem with sending or receiving?
Also, the error message is missing a sentence or two at the
beginning.

Thanks for replying, the problem is a recieve one, I can send without a
problem. the error message is also complete.

An error message like the one you received is generally preceded
by a sentence that says something like "The connection to the server
has failed."

Your mail account settings appear to be good, and I was able to
connect to that mail server. That problem can be caused over time
by an incompatible antivirus program. Windows Mail is not compatible
with most McAfee and Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

Thanks again for your help. I have now cured the problem, with the help of my
mail providers help pages. Here is a tranlation (french to sort of english).
Troubleshooting Windows Mail print | email to a friend

'Windows Vista incorporates new functions and mechanisms owners. In rare
cases a problem Optimization equipment peut-apparaître and certain services
may not function properly
(Windows mall for example).

Below is a simple method to test priority:

1. Press "Win" on your keyboard to display the Start menu, then go to the
party
"All Programs / Accessories."

In this menu, right-click on "Command Prompt" and then click "Run as
Administrator. "Click" Continue "to display the command prompt.

2. In the command prompt, type this command: netsh interface tcp set global
autotuning=disabled

The entry by pressing the "entry" on the keyboard.

3. Restart your computer. Your service, mail or web surfing, for example,
should be functional again.

PS: If necessary this command is reversible, simply follow the same path by
replacing the command
By: netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal

Glad you got it resolved. The Vista TCP auto-tuning issue
affects only a few older servers, so we tend to not bring it up until
everything else has been tried.
