I've had a Windows e-mail setup and working in Vista for a number of
months and suddenly today I've received the message

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.4dv.net',
Server: 'mail.4dv.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I did download some Microsoft updates today, which I believe included
SP3, but other than that causing complications, I have no clue. I've
checked the send and receive (mail.4dv.net) in both cases, which is
what I've been using for a long time, and they've been just fine.

I'm not sure how to reinstall Windows e-mail or if that would even be
advisable.

Any suggestions appreciated!!

I should have included that I'm working on a laptop with Vista that is
remotely connected to a 'server' operating with XP. The e-mail is
working just fine on the 'server', but it's the Internet Explorer
version, I believe, not Windows e-mail.

TIA, Walt

Hey gang,

I guess that I've solved my own problem - looks like I had something
turned off in Norton Internet Security, and when I turned it back on,
the e-mail was working again. Naturally, I have no clue as to really
what the problem was - I used to do a great deal of machine language
programming (actually assembly language, but essentially the same).
Here you have total control and you know who the 'idiot' was/is that
caused whatever problem, namely yourself! However, when using some
system, such as Windows, you're totally at the mercy of the
programmers and beta testers - not always bad, but it can be immensely
frustrating, as I'd suspect so many of you have discovered. Good luck
to all!

That often happens if the server is far enough behind in updates -
one of the updates is to let it work properly with Vista, not just
older versions of Windows.

Windows Mail is a part of Vista and very difficult to uninstall or
reinstall without doing the same to the rest of Vista also.

You couldn't have gotten SP3 for Vista - SP1 hasn't even been
released yet. You may have gotten SP3 for something else,
though.

Hi Walt,
We are having the same problem and are having similar issue. Let us
know what did you turn on in Norton Internet Security so that it
started working back.

Thanks

If you want to be treated as shouting, and therefore receive fewer answers,
post in ALL CAPITALS.

Few of the experts on this newsgroup will answer by email. Also, why
do you want answers by email if your email isn't working?

Windows Mail won't connect to Hotmail. If you want to use your
Hotmail account, you need to download and install Windows Live
Mail, which will.

The people who write instructions for Charter may be better than
those who answer the phone, so check here:

<http://www.charter.com/Visitors/Support.aspx?SupportArticleID=1661>

The instructions for Outlook Express should also work under
Windows Mail, as long as they don't call for using the HTTP
protocol.

************************** If you notice, I said I was using Windows mail and had Charter...hence putting my Hotmail email address as the reply address because that one does work, Charter does not work on Windows Mail anymore. I always type in caps and forget to change it, so no need to be rude. I know yelling and normal talk on the computer, no need to bash me for it. Charter won't help me, hence coming here hoping to get some answers. I will talk to Charter again, but according to them, they don't know anything @ Windows Mail and Vista so they have been no help at all. I guess I'll still continue using other email, although these companies want you to pay for their product and you can't use it, but they can't help troubleshoot. Thanks for replying. ****************

Charter is just giving you the run-around, because the same email settings
used with Outlook Express under XP will work fine with Windows Mail under
Vista. I would not deal with a provider who acted so ignorant as to say they
don't support a version of Windows that has been released for one year already!
