e mail extensions

I receive emails with attachments that have "email" as the extension and I
cannot find an application to associate with them to get them open. I have
tried to rename them as "eml" attachments but have had no sucess in
accomplishing that task.
Can anyone tell me which application to use or how to accomplish the
renaming process?
I am running XP Home Edition.
