The addresses used in autocompletion are not from the Contacts list,
but from a separate list of the addresses you sent the last 29 messages
to. This list is hard to edit; it's easier to just send 29 messages to
correct addresses.

Mr. Miles,

I have a problem very similar to the one you responded to. This is what I
recently sent to Dell's tecnical help and they referred me to the Microsoft
site where I saw your posting:
1. All functions of Windows Mail are currently running properly including
Send, Receive, Folders, etc.
2. I have had a name "mike" in my Contact file since I first got the new
computer. It is the nickname for my son, Mike Lirtzman. His email address is
(e-mail address removed). If I open the Contacts file, I see that record
is clearly there.
3. Until a few days ago, if I wanted to send an email to my son, I typed
"mike" in to the To: field and it would correctly autofill my son's address
from the Contact list.
4. A few days ago I received an email message from a different Mike.... Mike
Chamberlain ([email protected]), a real estate broker I know. I replied to
this message but did not enter his name or address into my Contacts list. I
also deleted both the original message and my reply.
5. Shortly after that I tried to send another email to my son Mike. I typed
"mike" into the To: field as usual, but the field was now autofilled with
(e-mail address removed)., not my son's correct address as in the past.
6. As of now, my son's record shows up correctly in the Contacts list and I
cannot find any record of Mike Chamberlain or (e-mail address removed) anywhere
on my computer. However, every time i type "mike" into the To: field of a
new email message it autofills with (e-mail address removed).

My question is: how did this (e-mail address removed) record get "stuck" in
Windows mail and how do I get rid of it?

Does your posting mean that all I have to do is send 29 messages and the
30th one will eliminate the "phantom" (e-mail address removed)? Where are these
autofill records kept in the computer? Is there a more direct way to edit or
delete from this list?

To autofill addresses, Windows Mail does not use the Contacts list.
It uses a separate list of the last 29 addresses you sent messages to.

The 29th message should do it. If you want to put your son back on the
list, use the Contacts screen to send one of these messages to him.

The addresses are stored in the registry, encoded and not in plain text.
If you're familiar with the registry, there's a way to empty the entire
list,
but it's very hard to edit otherwise.
