Hi. All of a sudden, I have a new problem. I have Vista on computer (came
with it) and I have been able to open e-mail attachments with ease until
yesterday, when it stopped working. It will not even allow me to save the
attachment because it says "the command failed to execute". It never says
that it is an unsafe attachment, but after reading all of the issues other
people have, I tried that solution. I have tried everything everyone
suggested, even downloading Spybot. Does anyone know what is going on with
this. I have rebooted, disconnected, prayed and cussed. Nothing has worked.
Someone, please give me ideas if you have them. I will try them.
I am not extremely knowledgable about computers, but I can follow directions!
Thank you in advance for any help you might offer.

Do you know why it would work for so long with Norton and then all of a
sudden it would stop allowing me to open the attachments?

Thank you both. I have tried everything you suggested and followed the
instructions on the link you provided and nothing will work. I just don't
know what to do.

No, I am not, Shawn. I can not save the attachments at all or open them.
When I try to save them, it says the command failed to execute. I just
downloaded Thunderbird and I can open my email attachments now. I am OK with
using that. I have to manually add all of my contacts because they won't
import, but at least I can open attachments. Thank you for responding.

I don't know how long you've been reading posts in this newsgroup,
but we get report after report from people saying there was no
problem with Norton (or McAfee) for several months, then all of a
sudden, boom, Windows Mail is no longer working properly.
Then, as soon as they uninstall that antivirus, full functionality returns
to Windows Mail.

Well don't know how long you have been reading either, but I do not use
Norton and have also experienced the problem. I have tried all the
mentioned fixes and all the free AV programs and am now back to my
purchased version of NOD32, none of which made any difference. Things
will appear to be working for a few hours or a couple of days and then
back to square one. As I mentioned in an earlier post I am running a
clean install, (and I mean reformat clean),Vista Ultimate on a 3 month
old top tier IBM ThinkPad with all current up to date drivers and
hotfixes....

Bob, first of all, I wasn't responding to your issue, I was responding to Christine.

Whether there may be sources of Windows Mail corruption other than what
is caused by McAfee/Norton is not pertinent as far as my response to Christina.
I will grant you that there may be multiple causes. That doesn't diminish the
fact that McAfee/Norton should be considered the prime suspect, and that
many people have obtained complete relief after uninstalling those particular
antivirus products.

Gary, I understand what you are saying, but if you reread Christine's
post, she clearly states that she has tried everything you and others
suggested, as did I. So there appears to be more research on if those
that disabled Norton/McAfee are continuing to be free of the problem.
Clearly those solutions did not help some of us, but we honestly
appreciate your help as it always leads to some type of resolution.

Hi Bob,

If Windows Mail is giving you that much trouble, you may want to
consider switching to Windows Live Mail or some other email program.
Windows Live Mail works great for me.

'Windows Live Mail Beta' (http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas)

Shawn
Well I may try Windows Live, but I really would like to find out what in
heck is causing the immediate problem. This just started a week or so
ago and I have been running Vista for several months. I have since tried
all suggestions including my own, which was a clean install of Vista .

Bob

After you have been a regular responder here for a while, you learn to
discount statements like "I've tried everything."
(Unless the OP specifically lists what she has tried.)
I agree that we need to be open to finding sources of WinMail
corruption other than just McAfee/Norton antivirus products.

I have to agree with Bob. I had a similar problem and received the usual
response of removing antivirus, in my case Mcafee. I tried Avast and AVG but
this did not solve the problem and actually caused additional prolems with
certain sites on IE requiring flashplayer & java such as youtube (Site
displayed ok but videos would not play). Ended up re-installing Mcafee to get
everything else working but still the problems with windows mail. As noted
previously had no problems since I bought the PC in May and problems only
started to occur in August which is when a lot of other people began having
these issues. Was there something in one of the updates that has
inadvertently caused this and are Microsoft looking at a fix as i don't think
this is specifically down to the antivirus

Obviously not all Windows Mail problems are caused by
incompatible antivirus products. However, we have seen
numerous reports here over the past 8 months from users
whose mail troubles disappeared after uninstalling and
changing their antivirus. This cause is so prevalent that it
tends to mask other issues, so as a precaution, we advise
users that as a first step they should switch to an antivirus
that is known to be 100% compatible with Windows Mail.

In your case, you would be well advised to follow Shawn's
advice and try out Windows Live Mail.

I also now have the same problem...only difference is I tried to load a
Norton antivirus that waas not compatiable and now cant uninstall Norton and
cant see attachments sent to me.
Anyone have a solution on how to uninstall Norton System Works 2003

Hi Gary it seems as if there is a real problem here that you guys don't know
about or even looking into. I Wonder why you asked someone else to download
another lighter version of an email program like Live . LOL your a tard as
well as the Administrator of the team who build VISTA. I could have
programmed a better OS in my sleep. Even the one guy I know who goes out and
does Corporate EVENTS for MS and teaches Visual Studio knows about 1/4 of
what I know is the standard for programming. He has a crap load of college
and still asks me questions. You guys need to get your head out of your asses!

In case you did not yet remove IE8:

Does this apply to all types of files?
Which error msgs do you receive?

Which way do you open WinMail? Via the shortcut in "All Programs"?

In case the latter:
Right Click on the Shortcut and open "Properties".
Change the entry in the field "Run in" to %UserProfile%.

Try to open attachments again with different file types after a re-boot.
