With my HP pavilion 563w, which has Windows XP, when I
attach .dst files, the recipient receives them as a text
file but they are not text files. They are program files
(for an embroidery machine) for embroidery designs. I
have no problem sending the files on my old computer,
which has Windows 98. I have compared my Internet
Explorer settings on the two and they are the same so I
assume the problem is related to Windows XP. If anyone
has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them.

A quick, possible way to get around the problem...

Zip the files, then attach the zipped file.
At the recipient end, UNzip.

XP has a built-in zip feature...
Right-click on the file, SENT TO|COMPRESSED (zipped) FOLDER

The recipient right-clicks the zipped file and chooses EXTRACT ALL.

I went to www.filext.com to see what programs would read
such an extension. There is a reference to the Home
Embroidery Program. If your friend doesn't have the
program installed on her or his computer then he or she
can't read it. XP doesn't automatically have every program
for every file extension. Keep smiling.

The recipient does have the Embroidery program as do I.
Even when I e-mail the file to myself, it is corrupted.
Any other suggestions?

The symptoms you describe, particularly the last one, would lead me to
investigate on the other end of the problem, namely, the application. The
embroidery people are probably familiar with your problem by now, and may be
able to offer you tips or a workaround. Good luck.

Thanks but the problem is not with the application nor the
recipient. It is something on my new computer. I know this
because when I send a file to myself using my old
computer, I can download and open it with no problems even
on my new computer. The problem is when I SEND the file on
my NEW computer, it gets converted to a text file. FYI, I
use Yahoo e-mail and I do not use OE.

If you are using a web-based email service like Yahoo, the problem may
be with that service itself. Have you ever successfully done this?
Even if the answer is yes, Yahoo may have changed something beyond your
control. Try compressing the file using WinZip (or XP's built-in zip
utility). Your correspondent will have to unZip the file to use it, but
it should make it there unscathed.
