Windows XP SP2
I have an NEC 2510A DVD burner. It was working fine.
Last month I removed it. This A.M. I re-installed it.
When I turned on the PC it would not recognize it. It does not show up in
the Device Manager list.
Thinking it somehow lost the driver(s), I want to download a new one.
There are several versions available, but what concerns me are the various
warnings I see.

1) "If you wish to update the firmware on an OEM drive, contact the
manufacturer."
I can't find my drive (2510A) on the NEC site.
2) "... the update may not be compatible with the VIA chipset in your
machine".
(My chipset is an Intel 865GV)

My quandry:
1) Are the firmware and the drivers the same thing.?
2) Should I just download the latest firmware update and ignore those
warnings?

Hi Dick,

Is the drive recognized in the system BIOS? If not, then the cabling is not
correctly seated. If it is, then this may help:

Under section 8 - Problems - there is a link to a patch that often resolves
this problem
1) Are the firmware and the drivers the same thing.?

No, drivers are software bits used by the system to interact with the
device. Firmware is the instruction set housed in the drives electronics
that interprets instructions from the systems and controls the actions of
the device.
2) Should I just download the latest firmware update and ignore those
warnings?

If it worked before, there is likely no reason to update the firmware. Even
if the firmware were out of date, the drive should still be recognized. I
doubt this is your problem.
