"DWWin.exe failed" when shutting down

For no obvious reason, I started getting an error message when I shut down
WinXP. The message is only on-screen for less than a second so I've been
unable to catch it all, but (probably paraphrased) it says that "DWWin.exe
failed to initialise because Windows is shutting down".

It may be that this started after automated error reporting to MS when FS9,
and later WinXP, said that they 'had to shut down' but I did not notice it as
following immediately, nor did it immediately follow any installation or
update.

Part of me doesn't care because because other sites I've seen say this is
benign but any error makes me wonder what is behind it and what it might be
hiding. I am also afraid that some important error message may come up in the
future and I will dismiss it thinking it is this one again. Besides, I've
spent a load of money on this machine and I want it to work properly!

Any suggestions how to clear this?

Thanks

Run Help and Support, enter doctor watson in the search field

Thanks for your response.

Dr W only points me to Help and Knowledge Base articles that I have already
scanned and, as far as I can see, none is relevant to the situation. Of
course Dr Watson has not recorded what it thinks the problem ws because it
could not initialise ... which brings us back the original problem.

Thanks for your response

I have now seen the log entry for the apparent causal error -- essentially
that the shutdown is out of sequence for some reason. I shall now go away and
start investigating further.

Thanks again

Here is the complete message: dwwin.exe - dll intialization failed.
Application failed to initialize because window station is shutting down.

At same time, I also get this error: The instruction at 0x5ad71531 reference
memory at 0x00000014. The memory could not be read.

Any further thoughts on this? Thanks,

dwwin.exe is the Windows Error Reporting executable. Most likely some app
was in the process of crashing when the error reporting kicked in. I'd
probably check the event log, specifically apps and system, look for any
critcal events, like 1001s.

HTH,
Derek

In the event viewer - system - I have numerous Red X Errors with Source as
dhcp and event number 1002.

Don't know what any of this means. Thanks,

My computer is less than two weeks old. I have 2GB RAM. Athlon 64x2 4600+.
Any other thoughts? Thanks,

A brand new computer doesn't necessary mean a good ram memory... test your
ram preferably with a dos program (as Plato said in the previous post). did
you run sfc /scannow utility? do you have errors in the event log?

Did not run sfc/scannow utility...Is this done at by clicking
Start>Run>sfc/scannow? I do not have Windows XP Media Center CD...it was
preinstalled. Out of luck on this one. Thanks for the effort...much
appreciated.

Event log: In the event viewer for system - I have numerous Red X Errors
with Source as dhcp and event number 1002.

Hi for some reason or the other everytime i login my msn messenger on my
laptop it is not allowing me to chat with none of my contacts. It keeps
shutting down and if i login again the same thing happens and it is very
frustrating. A message comes up asking me if I want to "close the program" or
"check online for a solution and close the program". It also says that
messenger is not working but if i use another computer msn messenger is
working. The thing is this is about a week going to weeks that it has stopped
working. I really need some help.

Thanks

First of all dwwin.exe is an error reporting tool. It's only trying to
investigate "events" that it believes is causing problems that may lead
to crashing.
you look at the Event viewer to know what exactly is happening.
