My dvd-rom drive has 'suddenly' stopped playing dvds. When I insert a DVD it
spins but never becomes ready. If I then open My Computer or WinDVD it will
hang until the disk is removed. CDs are OK. Drive properties says the drive
is OK. No sign of spyware or virus. Using Win/Xp Home with all recent
updates.

I saw a post reporting a similar problem a couple of days back. Could it be
a software issue, eg anything in recent Windows Updates, causing a problem?

Thanks for any ideas.

This sounds like you have a faulty drive. Are you able to test the drive by
temporarily installing it in a friends PC (that has XP home) and seeing if
you can read the contents of a DVD disk. If you can't in that PC then it's
your drive.

Thanks. I got the drive replaced as it was under warranty and all is well
now.
