I've burned about 500 CD's from this drive without a single coaster. I
was talking DVD's when I said 50. They are expensive for me and I don't
use them very often since usually a CD will suffice. Maybe if you knew
anything about DVD Burners, you wouldn't be saying that NEC is trash.
I agree Plextor makes good drives (when they actually make them), but
just because you don't know NEC doesn't mean it isn't a good drive. NEC
is a company who makes drives for other optical drive companies and does
not usually sell their own. Plextor usually makes their own (however
the Plextor PX-504 is a rebadged NEC ND-1100A, and a few others that I
can name for you), as does Sony (who solely makes their own drives
unlike Plextor), Pioneer, and Lite-On, but what you need to know is that
most DVD Burners on the shelf are one of those 5 with a different name
slapped on it.
One more thing to note, Plextor was never the leader in CD's as that
market was completely dominated by Lite-On. Though I have to admit, I
can't find hardly any information on your specific drive other than it
is one of few CD Burners that can actually work well with a Kurzweil and
supports the Kurzweil format, which would be a huge plus for me. I have
a 4x Plextor CD-ROM I use with my K2500 and I love it.
Just don't go trashing drives and hardware because it doesn't cost as
much as something else. You would have to be an idiot to go buy a TDK
880i DVD Burner for $150 when you can have the exact same drive (without
the custom bezel, software, cables, fancy box, advertisements, user
manual, etc) for $66. Only someone who didn't know would spend their
money on that drive.
To the OP, just get whatever you want, but I would suggest that NEC
drive as you are more likely to end up with this drive in a different
companies package than you are to get any other drive anyways.

Haha, don't crap yourself. That is one of the best DVD Burners on the
market. I'll give you a hint, this drive is inside every HP, TDK, some
MadDogs, and many others.
Not inside a Plextor, my friend ;-)
The reason it is so cheap is because it comes
with nothing. No software, no cables, nothing.
It isn't rebadged which
costs money, no custom bezel which costs money. This is an OEM product
and is even upgradeable to the NEC ND-2510A which does Dual Layer. It
hsa one of the best compatibility lists for any DVD Burner, and I'm sure
the people at cdfreaks.com would love to hear you say that about one of
the favorite drives. Read this:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/134/1
This drive's negatives mentioned at the end of the article have mostly
been fixed by patched firmware (unlocked DVD ripping, bitsetting, etc.).
I use this drive all the time and have burned 1 coaster out of over 50
DVDs (and that was because I used stupid DVDX Copy which didn't work).
Only 50 discs...and you think you're giving this
thing a workout? I have a Plextor R412C that I still
use on a weekly basis - 2500+ CD-R's burned with
NO problems whatsoever. Only reason it's not seeing
*daily* use is the slow burn speed-it simply was taking
too much time.
Time will tell with your cheap....whoops, "inexpensive"
drive. I wish you the best of luck with it, and hope
that I'm wrong, but I'll bet I'm not.

Even better. Get one of the highest rated DVD Burners (may even be
upgradeable to Dual Layer) from newegg.com for only $66 with a free 5
Pack of DVDs:

I love this drive and have never had problems with it.

Not yet you haven't.....
That's WAAYYYY to cheap for anything but
a junk drive. Especially a writer.
Cheaper is NOT better, especially with optical drives. Even
the Pioneer readers crap out after only a couple years...

You say you hate to change, yet a DVD Reader / Writer is less than US
$90.00 [for a top quality Pioneer].
It will cost that much to take your system to a repair centre and have
them open it up and inspect! Your time, expenses and their charges.

Hi! my 3-year old Pioneer DVDRom refuses to spin cds/dvds
anymore. It attempts to read for a second then ejects any
media out.
I cleaned the Laser Lens with a CD Cleaner wih no positive
results. The case has been opened but there isn't any
visible problem or obstruction. I know DVDRoms are
getting cheaper but I hate to change something when it
can be repaired.
Thanks for any help.
