Hi, thank you for your quick response. I am new here and
found that amazing! I did what you said and it found the
new hardware and installed it again but its the same
thing in device manager again. It says something about
the registry files for both devices arent configured
right. What can I do now?

Kensie:

Is this one drive or is it two separate drives? For example: My DVD
writer and CD writer are one drive. The reason I ask is that you may
have them hooked up incorrectly. By that I mean cabling and jumpers.
Also, what make and model are they?

well actually it is two seperate drives....one is a
dvdr+cdrw combo drive and the other is just a plain cdrom
drive. They both came with the computer, a Sony Vaio. The
burner drive is pioneer and the cdrom is Asus. They have
never been out of the computer and use to work fine. Any
ideas? Thank you so much for the help!

Hi Kensie:

Go to this web site:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Click on "C" and scroll on down until you come to CD trouble shooting
and fixes. Look all of them over and see if one of the fixes Kelly
has on her web site refers to the problem you're experiencing.
Pay special attention to the fix that describes "upper filters and
lower filters".

Since the drives were once working OK, the problem may be related to
software that you have since installed or uninstalled.

Good luck and let us know.

There are probably left over 'orphaned' registry entries. To tidy up,
get a registry patch file, cdgone.reg, from
www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click on it and merge
it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you use.
