My son has some sort of bug on his computer. He noticed it was running
really slow. He checked the processes and found "dvdkey.exe" using various
amounts of processor time (up to 95%). Basically, he cannot run anything
else.
We tried killing the process...it restarted itself.
We found the file (at c:/windows/prefetch/dvdkey.exe). We tried deleting it
and it recreated itself.
We started his computer in SAFE MODE. Again, the process kept restarting
and the file kept recreating.
Please help...

I/ve been busy, but I think I stopped the program.
I ran...
Norton AV, then Backdoor Agent.B Removal, then Trend Micro's scanner, then
Panda's Action Scan, and finally Bitdefender. Although each of these
programs found viruses and pests, I still hadn't found anthing that got rid
of dvdkey.exe...although I found two more files: windows/dvdkey.exe and
windows\docs&settings\"user name"\local settings\temp\yekdvd.dat. I couldn't
get rid of these files either.

So I went into SAFE MODE and re-ran Norton AV, ran NoAdware, and PestPatrol.
While clearing out the registers identified by PestPatrol, I found the
dvdkey.register. It was at HKLM\software\microsoft\current
version\run|*dvdkey.
I deleted the register, but it recreated itself!!!! (argh) I noticed the
path for the register was "dvdkey.exe rerun". I modified the value by
deleting the "rerun".

Without restarting (yet), I went to the task manager and dvdkey.exe was
GONE!!! I was also (finally) able to delete the files
Windows\prefetch\dvdkey.exe, windows\dvdkey.exe, and
windows\...\temp\yekdvd.dat. After emptying the trash, I rebooted, normal.

I got an error message that windows couldn't find dvdkey.exe. So there must
still be a stray register out there that I cannot find, but at least the
program is not running anymore!!
Thanks!
