I have a slot "DVD" on my computer. I know that I have played CDs and
downloaded photos from there, but now when I put in the CD, the red light
flashes constantly but nothing appears on the screen. Is there something
that I should be doing to start it up.

Thanks

Depends on the cd, some are not auto playing and depend on you to view them
with windows explorer.

You need to put more detail in your posts, ie (when I put in the CD, the red
light flashes constantly but nothing appears on the screen), what kind of cd
are you talking about? was it created with something you are familiar with?
what is supposed to be on it?

Thank you for your quick reply. The disk is a cd with photos on it. I have
used the cd at Wallmart's photo shop and printed off pictured already. When
I put the cd in the drive on my computer, the light flashes, but there is no
whirring sound, and I thought that a message should come on my screen showing
the contents of the disk.

Does the drive play other cd's?

it could be the laser has died and you need to replace the drive?

if other cd's play just fine, it could be the autoplay file has gotten
corrupted.
try viewing the cd with windows explorer and see if you can view the files
on the drive. report back here with the extension of the files, ie .mov or
..jpg or .bmp

most picture cd's are stored using .jpg

If you want a utility to use, to do some simple checks, try NeroInfoTool.

http://web.archive.org/web/20060321070424/http://www.cdspeed2000.com/files/NeroInfoTool_403.zip

That is an archived copy, available as long as the archive is running well.

You unzip the file, and the InfoTool.exe is the one you double click
to run it.

The "Drive" data, shows all the modes the drive supports.

When you click on the "Disc" tab, it evaluates the disc in the
drive. If you could see the media in the tray, yet Windows
didn't recognize it, then the problem could be Windows related.
If the media is not visible or detectable, it could be a
drive problem.

That utility is not a diagnostic, but it can give some basic
info on the operating environment.

Thank you Paul, for the links. I used them and my computer supports most of
the read and write CD and DVD functions. But it did not recognize that there
was a disc in the slot when I put a photo CD in. It also didn't recognize
that I had a dvd-rw disk in that is full of word docs., but a few seconds it
showed the disk contents on the screen. So it does seem that the problem is
to do with the drive.

I'm a little late into this thread, but AutoRun might not be set up right.
Put the CD into the drive and open My Computer. Double Click on the CD Drive
Icon and see if that opens it. If so then right click on the icon and
Properties. There will be a tab for autoplay
