In windows XP the DVD drive no longer recognizes any discs I insert (I've
tried different CD & DVDs). When I go to the DVD
drive properties it says it's working properly. I've deleted & reinstalled
the hardware but with no success. I'm told I should perform non destructive
system recovery but I'm concerned about what this will do.
Any suggestions?
thanks

Do this first.
With the PC turned off, open the case and remove both the power cable and
the ribbon cable from the DVD drive. Making sure you watch which way the
cable was plugged in. If you forget, the Red stripe faces the power
connector.
Once unplugged turn on your PC. Once your system is booted and sitting at
the desktop do a normal shut down.
Once shut down re-plug in the power cable and the ribbon cable. Turn on PC
again and try a cd in the drive.
If you still have the problem, it may be due to a bad DVD player.
Hope this helps.
