Thus spake Greg Eshleman:
Anything that stands out as far as freeware goes?

"DVD Decrypter is a free tool that allows you to decrypt and
copy DVDs to your PC's hard disk. From there you can watch them
with the likes of WinDVD and PowerDVD, you can write them back
to DVD-R / DVD-RW / DVD+R / DVD+RW / DVD+R DL / DVD-RAM media or
you can convert them to VCD / SVCD / DivX for burning onto CD-R
/ CD-RW.

"DVD Decrypter can write most types of CD / DVD images via its
'ISO Write' mode, and it supports all the latest writers
(including booktype / bitsetting on many of the major ones -
i.e. BenQ, LiteOn, NEC, Plextor, Sony). You can even use DVD
Decrypter to erase / format your rewritable media!"

I use it and I've found it to be a very good application.

Excellent apps. Use DVD Shrink if you're ripping a double-layer DVD. As the
name implies, it will re-encode the DVD so it will fit on a single layer
DVD.

It accomplishes this feat by video compression, not the ideal solution
for everyone. However, it can also split a single DVD onto one or more
discs, so you can copy a double-layer DVD onto two or more single-layer
discs with no loss of video quality, the only drawback being that you
lose the original menus.

I agree that DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink are both excellent.

Yes, you're right about compression. Apparently it uses a strategy to
achieve optimum results. The "deep analysis" function finds places with
little dynamic content and compresses those the most. I know the dual layer
DVDs I've ripped were indistinguishable from the original to my eyes. I
suppose if one did that with "Return of The Sith", which has plenty of
motion, the results might be worse.

Did you notice, if you rearrange slightly the letters of "Sith" you get
"S*h*i*t"? Coincidence? I think not!

For anyone with small children, DVD Shrink is a lifesaver.

Obviously. Being able to fit many more children in a small car would
be very handy.

Not to mention on buses, planes....

If you have so many children that they need to be shrunk, you probably need
to be sterilized.
