What is generally accepted as the best software DVD player on Windows XP?
The one that produces the best quality video and has the widest range of
options in the program?

Thanks.

The two that seem to get the most use are CyberLink's PowerDVD, and
Intervideo's WinDVD. Both products have demos that you can try out to
determine which one better suits your preferences. Some video card & DVD
OEMs are even moving to sell licensed versions of these products rather
than develop their own (ATI just switched to a PowerDVD derivative, for
instance).

(Though, ultimately, a good DVD player, a high-def widescreen TV, and a
home theater receiver & speaker package will blow away any PC :)

Ahhh, thanks! I knew of WinDVD and *knew* there was another one with a name
of something similar to CyberPower. CyberLink, OK, I'll look up that one
too.

Heh. Tell me, is there any point switching to a DVD player for home use, if
I'm still using a regular Sony 27" TV from three years back? To me,
switching to a DVD player is a two-step process, change to a DVD player and
upgrade the TV to show the better picture.

Well, how big's your PC's monitor? I'm betting it's not 27" :). I've
only got a 27" TV myself, but it's just more comfortable watching movies
on that screen (and with my 5.1 speaker package, natch :) than on my 15"
monitor, even though the resolution is sharper on the monitor. Not to
mention the uber-convenience of my programmable universal remote that
came with my receiver! :)

I find DVD-ROM features sometimes get in the way of playing DVDs on the
PC as well. Spider-Man, for instance, wants to autorun an installer for
its own DVD frontend software when you pop it in the drive instead of
just playing the damn movie.

Personally I use PowerDVD although its sometimes difficult to get hold
of as a product. Its often bundled with gfx cards, mine came with my
ATI Radeon 9000.
