Dvd not picking up drivers

I have recently had a few probs on my PC which have all but been rectified.
One problem remaining is that my Ricoh DVDr drive won't pick up any drivers.
On startup I get a message that 'new hardware' has been found, but then get a
'failed' message. However, when I stick a DvD in it works perfectly fine, so
do any dvd based games.
Looking at properties, the drivers tab shows that there are no drivers. I
have tried updating, rolling back but nothing.

My problem concerned SP2 so after reinstalling it I can't roll back with a
restore.

Its just a pain, but wondered whether any of you guys had any suggestions.

Look in Device Manager and tell me if any devices there have a yellow blob
signifying a warning or error there. What makes you think the issue is
with the DVD? Normally a DVD just uses the native ATAPI drivers. Did you
install drivers for this DVD at one time?

There is a yellow blob (with !) against the DvD drive. I can't remember
whether drivers were installed initially, knowing XP probably not but I have
downloaded a firmware upgrade from Ricoh but that doesn't seem to do anything.

Whats strange is that it recognises it correctly, but won't install the
drivers.

Since I don't know what "had a few probs" entailed, this is just a
suggestion:

Go to Device Manager and enable the ability to see Hidden Devices.
Expand the category for your optical drive(s). Delete all the optical
drives you see. Shut down the computer. With the computer off and
unplugged, reseat the ribbon cable and power supply connector to the
DVD drive. Check the jumpering. If all looks physically correct,
restart the machine. Windows should see and install your DVD drive
properly.

My 'problems' concerned Intervideo's WinDvd causing MM2 to crash. Without
realising this was the culprit I uninstalled/reinsalled SP2, then removed
WinDvd. This is where the problem started from.

I've picked up a few suggestions from these newsgoups and will try them.

Optical Devices are attached to the secondary master & slave.
Like DVD/CDROM on master & CDR on slave.
But when it comes to installing DVDR, it’s preferably recommended to be
installed on secondary Master than Slave.
Regards.

Okay, tried everything. Edited Registry as suggested in other posts but that
didn't do the trick. Whats strange is that it functions perfectly normal.
Burns CDs as well as DvDs so I know it is not a hardware problm.

You’re OS & its Registry are messed up.
My personal advice, after reading all would be format & fresh install, to
have an error free OS.
Installing, uninstalling makes an OS unstable.
It would be worth to spend some time & make a clean install.
Regards!

I can live with it for now. Just as well I have just ordered a 250g external
harddrive to back-up my master files.

I would just try to Uninstall or Update Drivers... the drivers it is using
in Device Manager and reboot. Plug 'n' Play should just reinstall them.
That is the only issue here. Look and make sure in Device Manager it is
seeing for drivers:

cdrom.sys
imapi.sys
redbook.sys
storprop.dll

suggestions.

Unfortunately not, the only drivers picked up is the cdrom.sys one. Any
suggestions to correct this?

My suggestion is to Update the drivers OR Uninstall the drivers and reboot.
Plug n' Play should just reinstall them. But you now have where the trouble
is. What we could do is find the inf that is used to install these drivers
and just right-click install. But that is easier said then done. I don't
know it. How about running sfc /scannow with the XP CD-ROM in the drive? I
would also look at the mfg site's Knowledge Base maybe the issue has been
recognized. You want to search there on ATAPI. You can also look in your
BIOS to see if the DVD\CDROM is being recognized. Try to change the BIOS to
verbose in other words NOT the fast boot option. And then at boot see if it
is recognized.

Oh let me just say there is one other thing you can do. Take a CD-ROM drive
and install that and reboot. The drivers should get installed by Plug n'
Play. Then take it out and put the DVD in and reboot.

Some good ideas there George. Strange thing is that as a drive it works
perfectly fine. Burnt CDs and DvDs on it yesterday so I'm not so sure that it
is a hardware issue anymore.

Reinstalled Nero 6 to see if that might do something but no. Would it be
worth re-installing PowerDvD to see if that can install some files to
identify the drive?

No you need to get it fixed in Device Manager before you start installing
software that will use it. At least that is what I would shoot for first.
