Any ideas for a program which will:
process files from standard DVD disk
Allow cutting, pasting, joining
Add fade in/out, basic titles
Reassemble to standard video_ts for burning?

Needed to clean up VHS & 8mm material recorded on cameras which has been
transferred to DVD via a standalone recorder. Direct capture
unsatisfactory, probably due to only 256MB memory, 1GHz processor.
TIA

I think that you are going to be very frustrated trying to use freeware
for the purpose you require.

However a few pointers - usual advice - go to www.videohelp.com and look
at "How To Edit" Then "view the latest tools" You will see that very few
of the tools are free and that the free ones have limited functionality.

Other good sites for information are doom9's site - have a look at the
guides section
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/software2.htm
and
http://www.mrbass.org/ look at the dvdripping etc sections.

If your DVD recorder saves straight to mpg - thats a bonus. The one I
have records (on-the-fly) to 'proper' DVD format ie .vob (video object)
files. Not many video editors will handle .vob files so see this guide
for ripping off the DVD to file

The free app for this is dvddecrypter and can be got at doom9 or MrBass.

My advice is go and buy the cheapest video capture card you can find that
comes with software. Most have a cut-down version of Ulead Video or
Pinnacle Studio. At least then you have a bit of hardware for your
money.

??Maybe using firewire?? - your computer spec. is probably ok for analogue
capture.
However since the type of editor you are liable to end up with will almost
certainly re-encode everything be prepared for lots of waiting.

Once you have your finished .mpg file then comes the authoring to a video_ts
folder.

Have a go with this free one - last time I tried it, I was not all that
impressed but then I have other (better, non-freeware ) tools available.

Thanks for the tips, Rich - I'll follow them up

It doesn't look like it

Yes this will process the DVD files

I've explored this, but the rig is in a half-height case with mostly on-
board ports etc, and there doesn't seem to be any half-height cards. Could
be rebuilt in a standard case, but that's a bit daunting at the moment.
Ihave USB capture and USB2, which doesn't work too well. Came with Ulead
Video - I'll reinstall and check that out

With a machine with that memory and CPU you will have no end of trouble and
frustration trying to edit DVDs. I have been down that road myself and
finally bit the bullet and got a computer with 1GB RAM and a 3GHz processor.
It does the job but can still take a couple of hours to actually render
edited video and produce the necessary files.
