When I put a DVD into the DVD drive, the computer acts like it's trying
to read it. It makes small clicking noises and definitely sounds like
it's straining. Nothing shows up, however, and the computer doesn't
read the disk. It acts like nothing is inserted in the drive.

I've tried playing CDs in this drive, they work fine. It's just DVDs.

Can anyone offer some much needed help?

XP has no asset for playing/burning DVD media (DVD discs). 3rd party
software, usually comes with a DVD player/burner add-on package.
XP's Windows explorer should natively be able to see files on a data DVD.
If the DVD movie is written in the strict audio ts/ video tx folder format,
written in strict ISO format, current windows media player should be able to
play it.
