both my dvd drive (panasonic slot load) and dvd burner (sony drx-510ul) no
longer show up as dvd drives after i upgraded to sp2, they show up as cd
drives. are there any driver updates available or any other options to take
before i uninstall sp2?

Did you check the drive manufacturer's web site to see if they had posted
firmware updates?

yes, the drives are updated to the latest specs. i went to the manufacturers
first. in a live chat with a sony representative, they told me that they had
seen some drives have compatibility issues with sp2 and recommended
uninstalling sp2.

after further investigation i have found that windows sees the drives as dvd
drives. they show up under hardware manager as dvd drives and in my computer.
both the panasonic dvd-rom and sony dvd-rw are able to read dvd movies.
however, the problem is when any sort of blank dvd media is put into the
dvd-rw, in "my computer" the device changes from a dvd-rw drive into a cd
drive and thus is not able to burn full 4.7gb onto the dvd media. i have
tried several different discs (+r, -r, +rw) and all have the same result.

XP's burning function is not capable of burning DVDs. Have you reinstalled
your burning software? Also, check the website for that software to see if
there are updates available.
