I bought a new case where the DVD/CD is basically sitting on it's side
and the screws go into the bottom part of the drive. I can't get the
drive to open this way when pressing the open/close button. Anyone have
any ideas as to why and how to deal with this? Or should I just give up
on the idea?

Most CD/DVD drives are meant to be used in the horizontal, not vertical,
position. Give up.

Back in the old days, when cases were as likely to be used with the monitor
sitting on top of the case as in the "tower" position, CD-ROM drives often
had a moving part on the disk drawer that you could adjust to hold the CD
when the tower was lying on its side. My old Compaq CD-ROM drive has such a
feature. Having finally replaced it with a modern DVD-RAM drive, I can find
no such "holder" on the new drive. My guess is that they were too redundant
in the era of tower-only setups. As Richard has said, your drive was
probably not designed to run in any but a horizontal configuration.

If you lay the box over so the drive is "horizontal", does it work? If
not, I would suspect the mounting is such the screws are in too far and
preventing the drawer slide from moving or the frame is being twisted
and the drawer is binding.
