lately when i burn DVDs with nero the buffer level goes
from around 80-90 to 40-60 to 20-40 then back up to 80-90
and DVDs take about 3 times as long to burn. from my
searches on the internet i have found that this is a
problem with windows but i cannot find any information on
the microsoft site. apparently there is a hotfix to fix
this problem, could somebody please direct me to it?

Greetings,

Try getting the updates via Windows Update. (Start > Windows Update). Also
update the drivers to your DVD Writer.

Thanks and best of luck!

Check to make sure it is running in DMA mode. At Control Panel - System
- Hardware - Device Manager look in IDE ATA/ATAPI disk controllers for
the Primary or Secondary channel (depending on whether it is installed
as Primary Slave with the HD or on the second cable). Double click and
look on the Advanced page. Devices should be on Transfer mode - DMA if
available, and it should show as using a DMA mode (a burner may well use
DMA Mode 2 rather than UDMA , but not PIO).

If it is on PIO despite the Transfer setting, then there has been an
error rate such that the system has fallen back on 'Slow but Safe' and
stuck there. Highlight the master controller, above Primary channel,
Action - Remove and OK out, power off and reboot to let PnP try again

Such devices use the standard drivers for the IDE controllers for
reading, and for writing use the drivers that came with the burner
package. Do not get any allegedly for the drive from anywhere else
