duplicate Personal Folders

Hi! I'm new here and can only hope this is the right place to ask these
questions. If not, please send me in the right direction.

1. I have 2 complete personal folders in my Outlook 2003. They are
identical. A while back, I attempted to correct the situation following
directions in the help menu, but they didn't work. I have tried to ignore
the second set of folders, but have decided that NOW is the time to get rid
of what I consider a nuisance. Not earth shattering, but annoying. Is
there a way to delete the duplicate set? This situation MAY have occurred
after a rebuild of my system, but I really can't remember if the duplicate
set has always been there, or only appeared after the rebuild. I keep the
"tree" closed on the second set of folders so it's possible I just wasn't
aware of it's presence until afterwards.

2. I also became aware (after that same rebuild) that the Outlook icon in
the systray does not always disappear when Outlook is closed. It used to
drop out of the tray whenever I closed Outlook, but now it almost always
remains there even after I have closed the program. I have to go to task
manager and end OUTLOOK.EXE to stop the process. Is this a "normal"
procedure to have to follow???

Perhaps these are frequent questions, but I scanned 400 of the most recent
messages and didn't see any that pertained. Can anyone provide
answers/solutions?

Thank you all,
n

1. Your mail profile is corrupt - create a new one under Control Panel->Mail
Icon->Show Profiles->New. Do not copy your old one.

2. Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you
click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.

OK....I am now in a state of panic............where are my stored
emails?????? I have/had 3 years of IMPORTANT info and now it's gone. You
DID NOT warn me that everything would disappear. Will a system restore fix
this???

Milly-I ran a system restore and got everything back and will now try and
figure out how to BACK IT UP before following your instructions.......PLEASE
warn people that back up is necessary before doing this. Not everyone,
including me, realizes what will occur. We aren't all gurus. I know that
backing up is a necessary evil but I have never had a backup of email work
properly and am very leery about it. But that's another story <g>

As for the other situation, I did hook up a PDA about the same time I did
the rebuild......bet that's the culprit. Or the fax, or the
virus/firewall......I now know what to work with, thanks to your
info....Thank you very much.

A new profile doesn't delete anything. The only thing Milly didn't mention
was that you have to add your old .PST file (which has all your mail,
contacts, appointments, etc.) to your new profile.

That sounds easy enough-How??? I have never done this before as I have had
someone else do these things and have had major disasters in the past.

I had a friend walk me through the process and I STILL have dupe set of
folders. Is this normal? Am I fixated on something that is supposed to be
there?

The icons on the two set of folders are different-the first set is indicated
with an icon (gosh it's tiny) like a house and some round thing setting on a
piece of paper, and the second set of folders has an icon of a box with file
folders in it. Is this normal? This second one is the one I'm trying to
dispose of, if it's possible. Following the instructions given, the second
set shows up as soon as I reach a certain part of the import process....is
the import process I am following incorrect in some way?

I have a feeling I'm being a bit too fussy about having something
unnecessary cluttering my nice, neat personal folders
pane..................hmmm. <G>

You don't need to import, because .PST is Outlook's native file format.
Just open a .PST file via File | Open | Outlook Data File. You can close
any set of folders that isn't the default mail store (i.e. the file to which
new mail is delivered) -- right click its root folder and click Close.
