Duplicate Name on Network

When I log onto my computer (running Windows XP Home) I get an error message
at the 'account selection' screen telling me there is a 'Duplicate Name on
Network'. If I just click OK then I can pass through and carry on using my
computer as normal. I have searched for this problem in the Windows Help on
my laptop but the resolving actions seem too complicated for a novice like
myself! Simple instructions as to how to get rid of this would help
immensely. I have tried system restore but to no avail.

P.S - There is only 1 account on the laptop (myself).

How many PCs are on your network? What is the workgroup name? Are you on a
domain?

For Windows and Windows networking, the PC name, Workgroup name, user account
name and Domain name can/should not be the same.

Example 1:

User name: Joe can not be used for the Computer name: Joe.

This error means:

1) More than one PC is named the same.

2) One PC may have the same name as the Workgroup/Domain name.

3) User account may have the same name as other PC or as the Workgroup/Domain.

Check your network!

I was not aware I was ON a network! Would a 'network' be computers that are
linked together by an Internet connection? I ask this because my Internet
connection is provided by a central uni hub which all the other computers
using it (I think) are attached to also. Is this what it means? But why
would this affect my PERSONAL settings? I will try logging on when I am NOT
connected to the Internet and see if I still get this error.
Also, why would it come up now if this is the case? I have been connected
to the uni internet system for 12 weeks now and this error message has only
appeared in the last 3 days. Do you think someone renamed their user account
on another computer?
Otherwise I don't know what network/workgroup/domain I am on @_@

The "duplicate name" is not a user name, it is the Computer name.
Right-click on "My computer" and select "Properties" then click on
the "Computer Name" tab. In the middle is a line that reads "Full
Computer Name:" ... this is the name that is duplicated on the
network. The "network" (most likely) is defined as the other
computers on the same subnet as yourself unless you are part of a
domain. Click on the "Change" button in the above window to rename
your computer.

John
