I have over 5000 image files on my pc and a lot of duplicates and
triplicates, how do I sort this lot out effectively?

Headtheball,

I saw your June posting about duplicate files and noticed you were left
without much help! I use FixIt Utilities, and like it alot.

There's all kinds of fun stuff in FixIt, and so all kinds of ways to muck up
the computer. Check out PCMag or Cnet for reviews of FixIt, and if there is
a freeware/shareware download, I suggest trying it out. It is really
important to back up all of your important files first, as well as create a
new rescue disk EVERYTIME before tweaking your computer. The program does
its best to inform one which files are okay to delete, but it shouldn't be
100% relied upon to know exactly (disclaimer in the program's help files.)

I'm assuming you are talking about personal pictures that seem to grow legs
and relocate to new folders on your hard drive. These are just suggestions,
but they work for me: Get familiar with your folders and files. Decide
which of them you want to use to save your pictures (write the path down
initially to help you remember, it does start to get confusing...maybe that's
just me??), and then make sure one copy of each picture you want to save goes
to that designated folder. I save everything to My Pictures/Family or
/Friends, /whatever, etc. in order to keep them sorted. Once you get one set
of pics in that main picture folder, while running the dupe finder program,
you'll know what is safe to delete.

If you have a recordable CD drive, you might consider saving your newly
created, one set of pictures to a CD or two or five. Of course a DVD would
hold more, if you're lucky enough to have one of those.

I hope this is helpful to you. Please respond if you have further questions.
