I just ran powertools searching for duplicate files/ I
have over 5000. Most of them are contained in the
following folders: I386 and Programs.

Can I safely delete one of the files, and if so which one,
the I386 or the Programs?

No! Neither.

Hi, PKB.

The I386 folder is probably the "mother lode" of WinXP files from which your
system installed Windows in the first place, and from which good copies can
be retrieved if the working copies in \Windows ever get deleted or damaged.
I'm not sure about the Programs folder; that may have been installed by your
computer maker.

You didn't mention the make and model of your computer, or whether WinXP was
pre-installed on it. Many computer makers put backup copies of WinXP and
"bundled" software onto the hard drive. Yes, there are probably several
thousands of them. Do not delete these unless you know why you are deleting
them.

If you try to delete a file which the computer requires
in order to function, doesn't a window pop up warning
that this file must not be or can't be deleted?
