Duplicate dll's

How best to find all dup;icate dll's and then safely delete
the thousands of resultingunnecessary files w/o causing
problems?

I'd be careful before emarking on this kind of activity.

Active dlls are "usually" stored in the system directory, but need not be as
they can be registered in any location.

You then have a "backup" of last good ones - which you may need if your
active ones get trashed.

Unless you are very short of disk space I'd leave well alone.
