In Outlook 2003 (windows XP) something causes Outlook to
display a copy of a PST file identical to the original.
If you right click on either of the file names and select
properties/advanced then the message "The operation
failed. An object could not be found." is displayed.

What gives?

Thanks

Search for a previous message I just sent today. I don't know what is
causing it but I think I have a fix.

It is obviously a bug or so amny people wouldn't be having the problem.

You got a ghost. Probably have to remove it from the registry if you can't
from File > Data File Management...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook

Within the Outlook folder, there are a bunch of folders with long
hexadecimal values for names -- those are the ones you need to look in to
see if you can find the ghost .PST names. If you delete one of the keys and
it points to your real .PST file instead of one of the ghosts, it's not the
end of the world -- your data won't be gone. The worst you would have to do
is recreate your Outlook profile.

I had the same thing happen when I backed up my Personal
Folders to network sever. To remove them do the
following.
1. Right Click on the Outlook Icon on the desktop
2. Select Properties
3. Click Data Files - There you should see all the data
files you see in your folder list.
4. Highlight the Data Files you want to delete and click
remove. Careful you don't delete the file you use.
I found this solution on annoyances.org
Good Luck!

I have been experiencing this problem for awhile and have followed every
posted solution on here without any luck. In no particular order, here is
what I have tried so far:

-Uninstalled and reinstalled Office/Outlook
-Deleted all of my profiles through the control panel -> mail -> manage
profiles area
-Deleted every profile reference and key from the registry windows messaging
subsystem area
-Created a completely new profile and PST file from scratch using a unique
name instead of "Personal Folders"

And still nothing. I have observed, however, that it seems like everything
is clean with only 1 instance of a pst file when I open Outlook until I add
more then 1 email account. Then when I close and open Outlook again, there
is the "ghost" Personal Folders file open again! When you try to close the
folder, I get the error Object Not Found.

I'm just posting this in case anyone has any other insight on this other
then what has been stated throughout the various postings so far.

Thanks.

Joe

Not knowing what version of Outlook you are using, but recommend you searc
Outlook Help for command line switches. In Outlook 2003 there is a switch
/cleanprofile that will restore the registry settings. You launch Outllok
from the Run command by pointing to its installed directory and adding the
switch, e.g.,

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\Outlook.exe" /cleanprofile

If this does not help, then

1. change the name of your *.pst file
2. Within the mail control panel delete the existing profile you are using
(but back it up first within the profile setup page using the Copy button)
set up a new personal folders.pst file
3. Launch Outlook and you should see only a single Personal Folder.
4. Import the folders and email content from your original, now renamed,
Personal Folder

That should do the trick.

Regards,
