Duplicate contacts in Internet Mail

I am maintained Vista laptops for two elderly people and set them up on
Internet Mail, they were on OE before.

They like that it grabs contacts for them, the problem is that it
duplicates them relentlessly: say Fred emails you often you get a Fred
contact a (1) Fred, a (2) Fred, etc... .

For the life of me I can't find were to fix this, the knowledge base
offers me the right choices but finds no documents. Does anybody have
this problem?

I can easily download Thunderbird for them but I'm trying to keep these
laptops as simple as possible.

Thanks for any solutions,

Marko

What Mail Client are we talking about? Make sure you don't have two of the
same accounts running in it. If you are, delete one.

Lincoln actually got it right but was way ahead of his time when he said,
"You can have some of you computer working all of the time and all of your
computer working some of the time but..." It was he that said that, wasn't
it?

The mail client that comes with Vista instead of OE, I'm not on their
systems now but I am pretty sure its simply called "Internet Mail"

I forgot wether MS newsgroups are bottom or top post?

I haven't see this duplication of contacts before.
You can turn off the feature that automatically adds correspondents
to the list of contacts. Go to Tools, Options, Send, uncheck the third option
"Automatically put people I reply to in my Contacts list".

Incidentally, there is no "Internet Mail", the program is called Windows Mail.

I'll have to turn it off

So if you have the same problem, why didn't you read the solution given
for that problem?
Go to Tools, Options, Send, uncheck the third option

I've seen no sign that anyone from Microsoft has read this newsgroup in
the last few months, so asking them to do anything here is a waste of
time.

Click on Tools, then Options, then Receipts. If there is a blue dot in
the circle before Always send a read receipt, click on one of the other
circles, then Apply. Click on Send. If there is a check mark in the
box before Automatically put people I reply to in my Contacts list,
click on this box, then Apply. Click on OK.

To add a contact, you then have to read a message from them, then
click on Tools, then Add Sender to Contacts.

Following previous advice I have turned off the feature, cleaned up the
contacts, then turned it back on. One laptop still does it, the other
doesn't. Now I will check the settings below (I have to go to each,
their owners would Not be able to do it.)

By the way, you can also right click on the sender's address to Add
Sender to Contacts. My favorite advice to new users is right click on
something, anything, to see what you can do to or with it.

Obviously other people have this problem, as you said it would be nice
if an MVP got involved. I still cannot figure out why any setting should
allow duplication, it makes no sense.

Thank you,
Marko

There are still MVPs here. Microsoft has given them a title, but
no pay, so they don't count as Microsoft employees.

Microsoft no longer sems to be adding features to Windows
Mail, even if an MVP asks for them.

I know this, I mention them because they often know more than the average.

Not a feature, a bug, a glitch, a quirk, an idiocy maybe but not a feature.

This duplicate contacts issue does not seem to be very prevalent,
judging from my close monitoring of this newsgroup for the past
12 months. Based on that relative obscurity, I would have to say
it is caused by some unusual set of circumstances, probably a
non-compatibility with a third party program.

Should this issue become too aggravating, and you are not able
to resolve which third party program is causing the conflict, you
can try upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

The Windows Mail programming group ignores MVPs.

I will be putting them on Windows Live Mail real soon now, they're
getting into multiple e-mail addresses anyway. I suppose it's Microsoft
answer to Thunderbird. I use it myself but that would just confuse them.

On the other hand I did identify the "unusual set of circumstances."

For reference, in both cases the KISS principle was applied. The only
third party programs are obvious add-ons, e.g. pdf and java, along with
AVG for anti-virus. Microsoft Update is installed, all update processes
are automatic. I do periodic cleanups and scan/defrag everything.

Should be foolproof, yes? No? Maybe so?

The e-mail addresses that caused the problems were those imported from
their old computers, both DOS 286s (one a 286 add-in board) updated to
98SE and running OE. Really, really slow. Really. The imported details
differed enough to be considered a different contact, the result is:
John Doe [imported from OE 98SE)
(2)John Doe [captured by Vista Mail, somehow different)
(3)John Doe [captured by Vista Mail,
also different from "(2)John Doe"]
Etc...

The first time I left the guilty John Doe's in place. All I had to do
was erase all of them, not just the duplicates.

Sigh....

Thanks for your feedback.

I assume you have the automatic saving of contacts disabled?
(Tools, Options, Send, uncheck "Automatically put people...").

Other than that, I'm not aware of a fix for this rare problem.
Should this issue become too aggravating, you can always
upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

I have just moved into a new HP PC running Vista and am having the same
problem. The only non-MS software running simultaneously is Palm Desktop and
Roboform. The contacts were imported from the old computer - Outlook Express
- and just proliferate.
