Is there a way to toggle back to the desktop without minimizing all other open windows?

It used to be easy in '98, it was always an icon in the task bar.

right-click the taskbar and go to toolbars and select
desktop. a "desktop" will appear on taskbar that will
have popup menu with all desktop items.

Right-click on your Taskbar and select:
Toolbars > Quick Launch
The "Show Desktop" icon will appear on the left
side of the Taskbar.

using showdesktop will "minimize" all windows.
with desktop menu will not "minimize" any windows.

Are you referring to the "Show Desktop" icon from the Quick Launch toolbar?
It's still there in XP.

key words are "without minimizing" other open windows.
showdesktop will minimize windows.

key words are "without minimizing" other open windows.
showdesktop will minimize windows.

I saw that. I also saw the word "toggle" and that's what that icon does:
toggles between showing just the desktop and showing your desktop with the
open windows.

ok...it's a toss-up.
let's see which method WireTwister choses.
maybe this person will post back with response.

<bg> I liked your solution too. It *was* hard to tell from the original
wording exactly what they are looking for.

And i use the showdesktop icon. with 13" monitor from my
win3.1 computer the taskbar is precious real estate!
I have 5 icons in launch bar with popup menu and 4 icons
in notification area. Yes the win3.1 computer still
works except for the mouse.

I assume you mean "without individually minimizing all other open windows".
Right click the taskbar and choose Show Desktop.

Another way to go staight to the desktop without *manually* minimizing
all the other open windows is to press the WINDOW_KEY-D combination.

The "show desktop icon is in the quick launch toolbar.
