When I plug in my USB memory-stick, I get a message that I've got a
USB 2.0 device plugged into a non-USB 2.0 port. How do I update the
port? Is it:
a. a software update
b. a hardware widget that I have to buy and install

PS: Should I even worry about updating? What's the benefit?

USB 2 requires XP SP1a, perhaps the USB update, and... a computer that
actually supports USB 2. The benefit of USB 2 is far faster transfer
speed than USB 1.1. Do you use Windows Update, and kept the OS patched?
If so, then it is propable that your computer is not USB 2 compliant,
and you will have to live with that warning.

If you do not regularly or automatically access Windows Update, you
should do so at your earliest, or sooner, convenience. Note: do *not*
download new device drivers offered by Windows Update. Get updated
drivers from your computer vendors update site.

Hi

I saw your post regarding USB 2.0.

The message you received basically indicates that
whatever you plugged it into, does not support USB 2.0.

If you can tell me the motherboard model and brand you
are using, I can search to see if it supports USB 2.0.
USB 2.0 operates about twice the speed of USB 1 or 1.1,
but you need to have a motherboard that supports it.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

USB 2.0 can operate at 40 times the speed of USB 1.1.

Actual speeds may vary.

USB 1.1 12Mb/sec. USB 2.0 480Mb/sec. Big difference.

USB 2.0 is both a software update (requires Service Pack 1) AND a hardware
update. You have to actually have USB 2.0 ports. They look the same, but are
not.

If you don't have a USB 2.0 port, you can purchase an add-in card to get
them.

I have the manual -- the little book that came with the motherboard.
I used both Norton System Info and MS Win XP Home System Info to get
the motherboard information.

The Asus site is down.

What am I supposed to do to find out if I can get USB 2.0 to work?

Hi again,
Sorry to be so confused, but :

I should:
1. Go to the Asus site and download the manual
2. Set up the BIOS for USB 2.0

Question:
What do I need the manual for?
How do I set up the BIOS?

The manual tells you how to setup the BIOS and use the USB
ports, and a host of other useful things.
That answers 1 & 2.

You will want to get the correct manual for your
motherboard.
You can get EVEREST from www.lavalys.com and it will tell
you all the details about your computer.
