I have a new machine running XP.
Can I also run W98 on it so I can see the performance
difference?

Yes, but to do this you will have to reformat your drive to FAT32,
install Win98 and then install XP as Win98 will not run on NTFS
formatted drives.

If you really want to go down that path then I suggest you repartition
your drive using a Win98 start up diskette (http://www.bootdisk.com )
creating a primary active partition that will hold Win 98 and an empty
Extended partion for XP. Reboot the machine using the boot floppy and
format the primary partition as FAT32, install Win 98 then reboot your
machine off your XP CD and let XP install onto the extended partition
formatted to NTFS.

Spot on. Had dual Win98SE/XP on an old machine for ages - worked like
a dream.

If your hard disk is formatted FAT32, you can do this. You'll need another partition/hard disk to install Windows 98 to.

See my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to Win XP Tips

For Win9x/Me: Install 98/Me after XP is Installed.
For Windows 2000: Install Windows 2000 after XP is installed.

If your hard disk is formatted NTFS, you'll still need an additional partition/hard disk and a boot manager such as PQBoot (part of Partition Magic) or BootIt Next Generation, www.bootitng.com.
