Should i install xp or 98se first inorder to create a dualboot and is it
necessary to use fat32 for xp or ntfs would do. FYI, currently i'm having
dualboot between xp and fc3 on my pc, actually i intend to create a triple
boot, is that anyway to do that without removing the two OS which is already
on my system? Note: xp currently is on ntfs.

I think that ntfs is better for XP myself

You can not install 98 on an NTFS partition,
You should install 98 before XP (always install the older OS first)

Not sure about triple boot I'm afraid.

Hi,

Win98 should go first if you are creating a native boot. The system (active
boot) partition must use FAT32 in order to use the NT bootloader, as Win98
cannot boot from an NTFS partition. The WinXP installation can be on an NTFS
partition as long as the bootloader isn't, however the Win98 installation
will not be able to read anything on that partition. If you are using a
third party boot manager (which I suspect you are), then follow its
instructions instead.

Thanks gerry, if that the case, meaning i have to reinstall xp inorder to
have it dualboot with 98se, is there anyway i can edit bootini?

Windows 98 must be installed on a basic disk on a partition formatted
with FAT32.
Windows XP must be installed last. Otherwise important files needed for
starting Windows XP could be overwritten.
You should keep XP on NTFS partition.

Windows 98 would have to go first, then XP.

Make sure you have two partitions, one for 98 and one for XP. XP will
be better on NTFS. Any files you want to share between the two can be
kept on the 98 FAT32 partition.

The problem you have is that Windows 98 has to be on first. Then XP
will install, overwrite the MBR so that it can be controlled through
the menu that’s driven by boot.ini.

If you installed Windows 98 afterwards, you wouldn’t be able to boot
XP anymore because it would overwrite the MBR. General rule is
install the older OS first, rather than the other way around.

So, if you want the dual boot, you’ll have to reinstall XP afterwards.
If you have Partition Magic, you could always experiment with
resizing XP partition, and moving it so that you can install a FAT32
partition for W98 before the XP partition, but I doubt you’d be able
to get it to work successfully. I’ve always had problems when
attempting things such as this.

Get BootitNG, resize your NTFS primary partition smaller by about 10-20GB,
create a primary FAT32 partition for 98se in the free space left after the
NTFS one, set it active, and install 98se there by starting from a 98
Startup diskette. XP will remain undisturbed, and fc3 will still boot.
There are detailed instructions, videos and forums via www.bootitng.com to
lead you through this process.

The MBR is the same for Win98 and WinXP.

It's WinXP boot sector that gets overwritten by the Win98 installation.

Indeed. However, if the order is reversed then the Win98 boot sector
can easily be replaced by the WinXP boot sector, using Recovery
Console tools.

The issue with having the Win98 FAT32 partition ***before***
the WinXP NTFS partition is that it will cause the drive letter for
the WinXP system partition to change. This is bad news.

The simplest way I've found to dual boot between Win9x/Me and WinXP
would be to partition your drive(s) roughly as follows:

C: Primary FAT32 Win9x/Me/Legacy Apps
D: Extended NTFS WinXP/Modern Apps

Adjust the partition sizes according to your actual hard drive(s)
size and the amount of space you'd like to allocate to each OS and its
applications.

Create the partitions using Win9x's FDISK so you can enable large
disk support (FAT32). (No need for 3rd party partitioning
utilities/boot managers and their frequent complications.)

Install Win9x/Me first, being sure to select "C:\Windows" (or
D:\Windows, if you prefer) when asked for the default Windows
directory. When you subsequently install WinXP, be sure to specify
"D:\Winnt" (or "D:\Windows," "C:\Winnt" as referred/applicable) when
asked for the default Windows directory, to place it in the other
partition. The WinXP installation routine will automatically set up a
Multi-boot menu for you. The default settings for this menu can be
readily edited from within WinXP. NOTE: If you elect to place
Win9x/Me on the "D:" drive, you'll _have_ to leave the "C:" drive as
FAT32.

This method can be adapted to using 2 physical hard drives by
placing the boot partition (C:, which still must be FAT32) and either
of the operating systems on the Primary Master hard drive, and the
second operating system on the second hard drive.

It is also possible to have a 3rd partition for shared
applications, but it would be necessary for such a partition to be
formatted in the common file format (FAT32). The applications would
also have to be installed into each OS (to ensure proper system file
placement and registry updates), one at a time, but the bulk of the
program files could be located on this common partition. I do not,
however, actually recommend doing this as, if you were to uninstall
such an application from one OS, you may not be able to gracefully
uninstall it from the second OS, having already deleted crucial
installation data during the first uninstall action.

The issue with having the Win98 FAT32 partition ***before***
the WinXP NTFS partition is that it will cause the drive
letter for
the WinXP system partition to change. This is bad news.

You are assuming that having Win98 before XP is bad news if you are
moving the partition.

If you read, it said reinstalling XP after Win98, therefore the drives
problem would not be an issue.

If you used Partition Magic, it goes through the registry to resolve
any drive letter issues, and therefore doesn’t become a problem.

Interesting. Unfortunately I do not have a recent copy of PQMagic
but I wonder if someone could independently confirm that it is
capable of doing this.

Changing drive references in the Registry is NOT listed as a key feature on
the Web site.

A colleague and friend of mine uses it, and has had no problems
whatsoever. It changes the registry too so everything matches fine.

This is the stuff that myths are spun with: "A friend of mine . . .",
without
having any first-hand knowledge of what exactly the original setup
was and what precisely your friend did.

I remain to be convinced, either by a first-hand report from an
experienced person who has done it himself, or by a promotional
statement from the PQMagic people.

Well, I was there and I was helping him with it, so I would say I have
experience of it.

I’m just trying to give advice. If you don’t want to use it, then
that’s fine. If you don’t believe it works, then don’t do it. But it
does work.
