I had WIN XP on my pc that recently underwant a mother
board failure...i have another pc running win 98...My
question is... can i move my harddrive with win XP on to
my machine with win 98 on it..and use the win XP as a
master and the win 98 hard drive as a slave... ?

Thank You,
david

David, moving a hard drive from one system to another is always a can of
worms. If you want to Dual boot with WinXP
you have to first configure the Boot.ini file. Then you have to remove
all the old device drivers from WinXP and install
the drivers for the current Motherboard. Which is always alot of fun.
BUT, if the motherboards are the same or fairly
similar then of course much less problems. Best thing to do is to hookup
your WinXP drive as slave. Move any
important files and folders and then format it. Then when you install
WinXP with both drives hooked up XP will
see Win98 and perform a dual boot and clean install. Hopefully.

To recap....

Bring in hd with Xp(as slave) on it...move important files
to win98 Hard drive...

Reformat xp HD // change to master...install win xp..

I won't lose any info on win 98 HD..or have any config
problems..?

thank you
David

WinXP will install the boot files on the C: drive which will be Win98
but the actual installation will be done on
your D: drive. You won't lose any info. Choose New Install and not
Upgrade.

Make sure the system is up to the task before attempting the move. Also XP
came with the computer, it is probably OEM and can't be moved to another
computer. More details in the link below.
