Dual booting between XPe & XP Pro

Chris

I have XPe (C drive) and XP Pro (D drive) on separate partitions of a single
phyiscal drive. I've copied the image from my XP Pro partition but since
completing FBA I always get booted into XPe without the opportunity to
select XP Pro.

If I edit BOOT.INI on the XPe partition and then reboot, it always gets
reset to contain only XPe. If I also create an identical BOOT.INI on the XP
Pro partition then it is ignored and remains unmodified after rebooting. I
have double-checked that BOOT.INI is correct.

How do I get the boot menu back?

Hello Chris

Do you happen to have EWF enabled on your XPe? If so when you chnage your
BOOT.INI, do you commit before rebooting? This could be why it is going back
to the previous setting when it is rebooted.

Cheers

Paul

Chris,

Can you paste your boot.ini file here.? Did you try modifying the
permissions on the boot.ini and then making the changes?

Can you try running this from a command window.

attrib - h -s -r c:\boot.ini
Make the changes to the boot.ini file and save it. Verify that the changes
you made persisted.

Thanks

Hi Chris,

How about putting some timeout in boot.ini?
Also how about disabling or committing EWF before you reboot?

The updates to BOOT.INI have definitely been persisted and the file is in
the correct location. I can even see the changes in Control Panel \ System
\ Startup and Recovery before I reboot. I have set the timeout to 30 secs
but it makes no difference.

Hi Chris,

What about EWF, do you have it?

Slobodan

PS:
Use first XPe CD it is bootable and contain WinPE that you can use to change boot.ini.

My problem is now resolved. I had to reformat the XPe partition and then
copy over the image again. The modified BOOT.INI which wasn't previously
working is now working.

The first few boots on my previous XPe partition were using a version of
BOOT.INI which didn't have the XP Pro boot option. Someone told me that
this may have caused the problem. (Updating the boot sector?)

Hi Chris,

As long as it is working for you. I have no idea what you have changed to differ from before.
1. Boot.ini always should have two or more entries. (Use notepad.exe to modify it)
2. Before format bootsector was ok, if it was not then you would not be able to run XPe.

Slobodan
