Dual boot menu not appearing

I have installed windows 98 on the first partition followed by XP on
the second.

my boot.ini reads:-

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

When I boot up the machine no menu appears but the system dutifully
opens up in XP.

If I edit boot.ini as follows:-

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=C:\
[operating systems]
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

It smartly boots up in Windows 98 but still no menu.

WHY I AM tairng my hair out - none of the threads seem to cast any
light on the problem. Can anyone help?

TIA

Thanks for taking the time to answer. 98 was installed first -
everything works fine on both systems except no boot menu.

Charlie

I can't answer your specific question however the following may be of help.

I have a dual boot system. I partitioned and formatted my HD into two
drives C and D. I installed Win 98SE first onto Drive D. When that was
completed I installed Win XP onto Drive C.

I've heard that when using a dual boot system with Win XP and Win 98SE, Win
98SE must be installed first regardless of what Drive/Partition you install
Win 98SE onto. I did it this way and it has always worked for me. Every
time I cold boot or restart I am given the option of what OS I want to
initialize.

Hi Charlie,

Boot the WinXP CD and run the recovery console, run bootcfg /rebuild from
the command prompt.

nope definitely partition(2). That was not the problem. However thanks

Charlie

Try changing the patition to (1)that will probably fix your problem
